Without any transfer offers, Pato returned to Corinthians after his loan ended with Sao Paulo. He turned down a move to Chinese side Tianjin Quanjian in which he would earn more than €1 million per month as he seeked a move back to Europe. After that, it was suggested by his agent that he could join Benfica, Chelsea, Liverpool or Sporting during the January transfer window.

On 26 January 2016, Pato flew to London to undergo a medical at English Premier League side Chelsea. Three days later, Chelsea announced the signing of Pato on loan until the end of the 2015–16 season. Upon signing Pato said: "I am so happy to sign for Chelsea. It is a dream for me. I am looking forward to meeting and getting to know my new team-mates and cannot wait to play."

On 2 February 2016, new signing Pato was given the number 11 jersey for the remainder of the 2015/16 campaign.
