GAEL KAKUTA (On loan to Vitesse Arnhem)

An eye-catching left winger, Kakuta boasts impressive skill on the ball and was voted the Academy's Scholar of the Year by staff and peers in 2008.

Having joined from Lens, the midfielder made his way up through the ranks by finishing his first season as the top scorer in the youth team, bagging 12 goals from 20 starts; while he also scored a Youth Cup hat-trick at Port Vale.

A quick, incisive dribbler, Kakuta is also a France Under-17 international and helped them to the final of the European Championship in 2008, which they lost.

2008-09 saw him begin the year with injury problems, but the dazzling winger was hit even harder at the start of the new season as it was revealed that he breached a contract signed with the French club before signing for Chelsea.

As a result, the player was condemned to pay compensation in the amount of €780,000 and banned for four months, with the Blues banned from making a transfer for the next two years.

In February 2010, though, the Court of Arbitration for Sport reversed the decision meaning that all the punishments were cancelled and Chelsea were cleared of all charges.
