BLUES CRUISE INTO LAST EIGHT

Feyenoord 1-3 Chelsea

UEFA Champions League

Adrian Sherling reporting

Chelsea advanced into the last eight of the Champions League with a convincing victory over Feyenoord in Rotterdam.

The Dutch champions looked a shadow of the side which took four points off Lazio a fortnight ago and they must now rely on Chelseas result against the Italian side next week if they are to qualify.

Gianluca Vialli chose an experienced line-up preferring French World Cup winner Didier Deschamps and Romanian Dan Petrescu for the trip to Holland, leaving young English players Jody Morris and Jon Harley on the bench.

Chelsea started on fire and spurned a golden opportunity to take the lead after just eight minutes when Frank Leboeuf missed a penalty after Tore Andre Flo was hauled to the ground by Kees van Wonderen.

Leboeuf, having missed only one penalty in 19 in his Chelsea career, saw his shot pushed away by highly-rated Polish goalkeeper Jurek Dudek, low to his right.

Dudek, linked recently with a move to Manchester United, had already made a wonderful stop from Gianfranco Zolas volley before he saved the Frenchmans spot-kick and must have increased his value with some other fine stops.

Zola looked a different player to the tired performer seen in last weeks match. He seemed revitalised, both physically and mentally, as he gave his side the lead with a fierce volley six minutes before the break.

As Dennis Wise played the ball into the diminutive Italian, he took one touch to control it, before releasing a thunderbolt which flew into the back of the net off both posts.

Feyenoord coach Leo Beenhakker introduced Ivory Coast international Bonaventure Kalou at half-time having seen his team, who took four points from Lazio, out-played by the Premiership side. His change paid dividends as Kalou cancelled out the Blues' lead after 59 minutes, tapping into the empty net after Ed de Goey inexplicably palmed the ball to him as it was drifting out for a goal kick.

The equaliser turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the Blues, who had started to cruise. Within five minutes, they had retaken the lead, thanks to a rare header from Dennis Wise.

Both Ulrich van Gobbel and Bert Konterman were watching Gustavo Poyet, allowing the little midfielder to creep in at the far post and head past Dudek. Wise is certainly enjoying European competition, this his fourth goal in the Champions League so far this season.

Tore Andre Flo made sure of Chelseas place in the quarter-finals with a stunning solo strike. Picking the ball up on the right wing, he beat his man before firing past Dudeks desperate reach.
