Chelsea
doctor Eva Carneiro wanted to be "the one that ran onto the field" when she
was first contemplating a career in football.
Carneiro has been demoted from sitting on the Blues bench following manager
Jose Mourinho’s public criticism of Chelsea's medical staff in the 2-2 draw
with Swansea on the opening day of the season, although she will continue to
work with the squad at the club's training ground.
She treated Eden Hazard on the field late in the game, leading to Hazard
being forced off, putting 10-man Chelsea down to nine for a short time.
Mourinho was furious, and after the match said: "I wasn’t very happy with my
medical staff."
In an interview with the Swedish FA last year, the Chelsea club doctor, a
role in which she has been employed for six years, spoke about her ambition
to be involved in high-profile football matches and how much she enjoys the
role.
"I was a 16-year-old girl watching Champions League games and I really
wanted to be the one that ran onto the field," she said.
"I was lucky. I knew what I wanted to do at 16 and there was nobody else
doing it. The best thing about my work is that I get to do what I love every
day.
"It’s exciting and there’s always something happening – it’s very different
to a nine-to-five job."
